Monica Martinez Diaz: Ixayopatzca
In Ixayopatzca, a nahuatl term that refers to “cry with tears”, I created a short film referencing the role of tears in Mexican’s current society through soap operas. The work is influenced by the Mexican social thought “trágate tus lágrimas” (to drink your own tears) which means to be emotionally strong. The image of a woman drinking her tears that were generated after a purposely induced crying represents the Mexican societal pressure of being emotionally strong beyond any circumstance. The piece portrays the dramatic point that is acted out in the soap operas in order to build a bound of identification between the scene and the spectator. Nevertheless it also represents the importance and empowerment of crying in the aztec civilization.
