Every Spectator is Either a Coward or a Traitor

Vinyl banner on facade of building. 20 ft x 10 ft. 2010.

A twenty foot long banner work installed on the facade of the Appleton Museum, Every Spectator is Either a Coward or a Traitor utilizes a quote from Frantz Fanon’s book, The Wretched of the Earth, which was deployed as a banner as part of a political film by Grupo Cine Liberacion, an activist film collective, in 1968.

This conjunction of text and film is but one example of the modernist avant garde’s mythology of political action, which is diffusely echoed in current art strategy.
